Broncos still face looming QB question as workouts begin
Colo.Le'Veon Bell Jersey – As the Denver Broncos gathered for their first team meeting of the offseason Monday morning, Aqib Talib couldn’t help but look to the familiar seat in the auditorium where for the previous years, quarterback Peyton Manning always sat.
The chair was empty.
“I don't think anyone was bold enough to go sit there,Tyler Eifert Jersey” Talib said.
Manning retired in March, and that his chair is still empty is just another reminder that the Broncos are still trying to figure out to replace him, as well as former backup quarterback, who signed a big contract in March to become the Houston Texans’ starter.John Brown Jersey
The Broncos have just two quarterbacks on the roster now for the start of the offseason program: veteran Mark Sanchez, acquired in March in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, and 2015 seventh-round pick Trevor Siemian, who spent his rookie year as the Broncos’ No. 3 quarterback.Brandon Marshall Jersey
The team is expected to add at least one more quarterback to the mix, whether through the draft at the end of April, or by acquiring another veteran. Former Texans quarterback Brian Hoyer was officially released on Monday, and the Broncos have engaged in trade talks with the San Francisco 49ers regarding Colin Kaepernick.Jaylon Smith Jersey
But for now, Broncos players seem excited about Sanchez, who is trying to establish himself as a team leader before any other quarterbacks arrive.
Sanchez organized a passing camp for a handful of Broncos players, including Siemian and veteran receivers like Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas,Sterling Shepard Jersey earlier this month in Southern California. Sanchez rented a house for his teammates and arranged for work out space. He’s been in frequent contact since via text messages, Sanders said.
“I could tell he wants to be a leader on this team,Kenny Clark Jersey he wants to be our quarterback, he wants to be the guy. I was impressed by his arm strength, I was impressed by the throws he was making,” Sanders said.Thomas Davis Jersey “I've been hearing around the locker room that he's been spending extra time around the facility, and that's the type of guy that we need.”
Still, Sanders said he and his teammates know Sanchez has not won the starting job. That’s why he said other players,Martellus Bennett Jersey like Thomas and running back C.J. Anderson, must try to fill the leadership void on offense that Manning’s retirement has created.
“We're going to get the chemistry right.Jimmy Graham Jersey The good thing is, Peyton gave us the blueprint on how to go about doing it. It's spending time off the field, getting to know guys. We're going to continue to follow that blueprint,” Sanders said.
